Fraser Coast

Though famous for its paradise-like Fraser Island and the visiting whales, the Fraser Coast offers plenty of other amazing places and adventures. This picturesque region is centred on the twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Check out the former gold mining town of Gympie and the beautiful nature surrounding Fraser Coast, both on land and in the water. The warm and mild climate means that the Fraser Coast is perfect to explore all year around.

The Region

The Fraser Coast Region in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland offers an amazing diversity, from the stunning Fraser Island to Hervey Bay and the Great Barrier Reef — these are just some of the world-class attraction that attracts visitors to the region every year. Experience the iconic Australian landscape, including World Heritage listed natural wonder, amazing coastline, tranquil hinterland and ancient rain-forests. The region is located about 250 kilometres north of Brisbane and centred on the twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough but also includes Fraser Island. It was in fact not until March 2008 when the City of Hervey Bay merged with the City of Maryborough, Shire of Woocoo and part of Tiaro to form the Fraser Coast Regional Council. But the name came into common use in the early 90s from a combination of Fraser Island and Cooloola Coast. Whether you are after a calm sun and sea holiday or a more active holiday, Fraser Coast offers the best of both worlds.

Do & See

The whole area is a playground for any visiting animal lover wishing to encounter the migrating whales at sea, the egg-laying and hatching of loggerhead turtles on lovely Mon Repos Beach and other abundant marine life. Why not travel back in time to visit the charming old Victorian town of Maryborough and the gold mining museum in Gympie that re-presents the time of its golden era, which had gold diggers flocking to the town and saved Queensland from bankruptcy. You will for sure find some favourite activities to do whether it is relaxing by the beautiful beaches or exploring the amazing nature. If you're a fan of adrenaline, the region offers plenty of activities like hang gliding from the Carlo Sand Blow, racing on the Hervey Bay Go-kart Track or jet skiing along the coast. Whatever you choose to do make sure to enjoy this stunning region.

Dining

The splendid climate is perfect for al fresco dining and Hervey Bay’s Esplanade and marina offer plenty of great dining experiences with views to the sea, as do the towns all along the Fraser Coast. Maryborough also has some fine dining with plenty of good restaurants overlooking the Burnett River. You can find a wide range of international cuisines but seafood is, of course, the speciality here including the famous Hervey Bay scallops.

Cafes

The region’s sun swept weather adds on to the experience for a great stay on the Fraser Coast. Grab a coffee in the sun and enjoy a sunny day at the coast. There's plenty of opportunities here.

Bars & Nightlife

There are plenty of bars to visit on the Fraser Coast if you want to cap off the day with a night on the town. Below are a few recommended bars you can start the night with. The Fraser Coast does not swim in nightclubs but the warm weather turns the outdoor cafés and pubs into late night drinking and dancing spots. In Hervey Bay you can find these along the Esplanade and on the parallel-running Boat Habour Drive.

Shopping

Torquay Road in Pialba hosts the bulk of Hervey Bay’s major shops, banks and a post office. Both sides of Boat Habour Drive are lined with stores and shops. There is also the Bay Central Shopping Centre containing a Franklin supermarket, Target as well as several smaller speciality shops. The Esplanade is lined with shops in between all the cafes, restaurants and accommodations.
